Shinkai Fukudome

Kouchi, Japan 7 years old

A heart that values nature revives it, and the gentle light it brings us carries happiness.

Judge's Comment

In the vivid, bright, and powerful colors of nature, I felt a profound sense of "kindness." The work inspires us to continue cherishing nature and to never forget the importance of caring for it.

A Warm Feeling

I first expressed kindness through colors. Since I imagine kindness as warm and comforting, I used orange, yellow, and pink. I wanted to create a feeling of warmth overflowing, so I made the colors spread out. To achieve this, I first wet the paper with water before applying the colors. Because I wanted to convey a sense of genuine warmth overflowing from the heart, I drew a heart in the center and colored it a gentle pink. After that, I wet the area around the heart with water to make it look like warm, kind feelings are overflowing from the heart.

In the heartwarming use of colors, I felt a kindness and warmth that could not be contained within the work alone. It seems clear that the artist gave much thought and ingenuity to the way it was created. It is a wonderful piece that brings a smile to those who see it.
